Does Page Rank Help You Make Money Online?
The Advantages Of Having An Authority Blog
Google has recently updated Page Rank and all over the blogosphere, people are cheering (or bemoaning) their fate.
Thoughts On Making Money On the Net received a PR3, as did A Bloggers Soapbox and Blogging Tips For Beginners. We were all pleased, even though we know that PR alone will not make you money, we see it as recognition of the hard work we have all put into our blogs, in terms of original ideas about making money, trying our best to give great advice for new bloggers and providing a great place for bloggers to communicate.
But the concept that PR alone will not make you money does need to be considered here. From working in adult blogging I know that a PR0 blog can get to the first page in Google and make good money, but I also know that a PR0 blog (especially an adult blog) will not provide the greatest way to get links for your other blogs, because the blog, popular as it may well be… will not be seen as an Authority Blog in the eyes of Google. Nevertheless, as I said in my previous post about backlinks, many links from a PR0 blog can still be very useful, most particularly if the blog is in the same niche.
But let’s consider Authority Blogs.
Google Page Rank is usually assigned on the basis of Authority (although not always, as fits the labyrinth which is Google PR…). But let’s make a stand here and say that Google PR is usually linked to Authority and then ask the question:
How Does Having An Authority Blog Help You Make Money On The Internet?
I’ll give you three examples:
Darren Rowse at ProBlogger has a PR6. He has many thousands of readers, posts regular tips and many bloggers read ProBlogger to get advice on how to make money on the internet. According to some sources, Darren makes a very good living as a professional blogger and Google definitely rates ProBlogger as an Authority Blog.
But does all that income come from ProBlogger? Of course not. Darren has a heap of blogs and sites making money for him, and he doesn’t mind talking about many of them in his posts. In fact, this helps them no end. Because he links to his other blogs as relevant examples within his posts, Google won’t mind at all. After all, ProBlogger is an authority blog. Google thinks we can trust its recommendations and acts accordingly. Now this is an excellent way to use an authority blog.
RT Cunningham’s blog Untwisted Vortex, An American Living In The Phippines is also very well respected (and a PR5 as I write this). RT has built up a large following of loyal readers by being a great blogger. He not only writes interesting and informative posts about The Philippines, he also provides excellent advice for bloggers on Monetization, Up-to-date Wordpress Optimisation Tips, Blog Reviews, and is an ardent advocate for using ‘dofollow’ on comments and provides a page for bloggers to post their dofollow blogs.
Because of RT’s consistent hard work and excellent content, Google sees his blog as an Authority blog. RT can make good use of this to talk about the place he now calls home in an informative and quite unique way. And people looking for advice about travelling to the Philippines can get help too. A win, win situation and another excellent use of Authority Blogging.
Those are two out of many ways in which Being An Authority Blogger Comes In Very Handy. There are other ways which also work and these can be a little ‘grey (or even black) hat’…
Grizzly has a brand new Make Money Online blog which is already providing excellent advice on how to make a living on the internet. However, because it is so new, even Grizzly cannot make this blog an Authority Blog yet….. But he has quite a few authority blogs and has been testing out ways to use authority blogs to show that Duplicate Content Is Googles Weakest Link .
The issue involves scaping and How Google Really Reacts To Scraped Content In Relation To PR. It makes a very interesting read (both the article and the comments). It’s just another way Authority Works. There are many more ways to make use of authority, be they whitehat, greyhat or blackhat.
So overall, we can congratulate ourselves for our increase in PR and then use it to our advantage, or we can tell ourselves PR doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things and just get on with making a living online. Either way will work if we work hard at it.
You do not need to own a high PR or Authority Blog to make a living on the internet. But if you have one (or more…), it sure can help…

I agree, having an authority blog can only help. By the way, congrats on the PR update!
While no one knows what garners the coveted PR rank, we can all guess and assume. If we use the “best practices” when it comes to building authority, I think we’ll be okay.
Thanks JK,
I’ve got another tag opened on your blog post now, but I’m setting up the sound first, so I can watch the video (our mass of wiring we’ve got set up here is little complicated…).
Yep, ‘best practices’ seems to be the best way. Of course, I guess there are ways to utilise this too… lol!
Sounds good. Yeah, I just follow the trends and the norm, most say build links, create content, and leave comments. So, that’s what I do, I let it grow naturally….
Yep, best practice, lol!
Personally (and again I could be wrong..) I still think ‘content is king’ … but people have to be able to find that content, so you have to build links - naturally of course
I am trying to figure this out, PR probably reflects value of websites or pages, not so much or maybe not at all indexing position in Google search engine index.
I have pages with low PR on the top spots in search, who knows how G looks at it, what they do. Regarding money, some webmasters probably judge sites with higher PR# are better to place ads on. But I reckon ROI is much more important, better money can be made from PR0 pages if the content, structure of the page and traffic suits better for advertising. Thank you, but this was only my opinion.
Hi Pizza Oven,
Nice blog you have there by the way.
Yes, you’ve picked up on something which also needs to be discussed and is often forgotten (although this would take another blog entry at least…). Pages can all have different PR values and we can take advantage of this too.
Leaving that aside (for now…). I agree, ROI is more important to the webmaster, in terms of making money. However, for me it depends on how the website is making money.
If the site or blog relies upon selling advertising, then PR will be a factor, along with organic hits (most important) and (in some cases, but not all) regular subscribers. Depends upon the advertising and the hoped for recipients of that advertising…
But, if a blog is set up for adsense, or some other pay per click method to make money (or for adult in some cases), then, given the correct linking strategy and loads of good content, it won’t matter what PR it has (as long as it’s indexed of course…).
So no problema. I agree with you
I was simply saying how an authority blog can use that authority to their advantage. And, hopefully, make even more money
It has never come across my mind how much money I could make with my new PR and never been my first thought. Sure I am happy about it; not because I could see money coming into my paypal account but it’s simply because I’m satisfied that all the hard work and my experimentation with different link building strategies are paying off.
FYI I’m not in for money as I make my money off the blog and monetization on my blog is just another experiment to see what works and what’s not.
Oh yes, I agree “You do not need to own a high PR or Authority Blog to make a living on the internet.” There are just tons of way to earn money online, all it takes is a little bit of creativity and a high dose of passion; both are what I’m lacking of…
Another great stuff you have it here, Zania.
Thanks Yan,
I have to be honest though and say I am blogging for money. No question. If I didn’t make money blogging we wouldn’t have enough coming in to pay our bills.
That said though, this particular blog doesn’t make me much money (although Hostgator has done a bit and RevResponse looks ok as well…). I never set it up for that purpose (which is why it doesn’t look that great or that ‘professional’ - I would love it to look good like Blog For Beginners, but I haven’t had the time to even think about that yet).
I set this blog up as a place to discuss the make money online niche and what goes on there - the good things and the scams - and maybe help out a few people who were feeling a little lost with all the conflicting info in the MMO niche.
And observations of what goes on - I love writing about that. All those interractions and how different people use their skills to make money really fascinate me. There’s a ton of stuff people do but do not necessarily talk about (legit I’m talking here - although I am interested in the non legit too…). I love it!
But I seem to have spent an awful lot of time here and, together with my Fraying Edges Depression Help blog (which isn’t yet properly monetized), it’s kinda grown up quite a lot!
And the PR3 was a bit of a surprise (considering the slightly adult domain name of this blog), so maybe I should be looking myself at ways to make that PR more effective…
As to creativity and passion in what you do, I do not see that lacking in you at all. I think you are kidding me
Hey Zania,
First thing first, I forget to thank you for link love on my earlier comment so here I say “thank you 2x”. One for quoting one of my article and two for the compliment on my blog design. The truth is I don’t design it myself, it’s a premium theme I invested my money on (hmmm, I’m spending more than I’m earning right now, so the balance sheet is kind of in the red) and I tweaked it to my liking.
When I first came here I was asking myself why there was a mismatch between your domain name and the niche you are in but who cares? if your articles are good which they are, it really doesn’t matter as you have already your audience and you can count me as one of them. And Google doesn’t even care about your domain at all by giving you a PR 3. Congrats!
Lastly, though I haven’t gone into this MMO thing, I’m sure your articles may serve me well in the future. As for now, I’m working hard to keep my “blogging” passion alive and planting the seed of creativity in between my other commitment that deserves too much of my attention. See I’m not kidding you…
I’ll see you around, gal.

[...] you like this post, and think it would be a good AUTHORITY article… scratch it… sniff it… lick it… but whatever you do, please Stumble [...]
I’m blushing from embaressment, and by writing this, I’m not helping either… When I saw this show up on my backlinks, the excerpt said something about “Authority Blogs”… I almost had a heart attack because I THOUGHT you were inferring that PB was on it’s way… then I dropped in and read the full article.
Another zinger by the Z!
I would have to say that a higher PR helps with the SERPS. It’s not required, but it helps.
Yan,
I always give link luv where it’s due
As to the domain name, somewhere in my early posts here is an explanation of why I used this one. It was literally just bought on a whim from Godaddy - one of their ’stop! have you considered this domain name also?’ type things. So it was purchased along with another similar adult domain name, which I definitely use as adult!
This one was sitting around for a while doing nothing, so I thought ‘why not use it?’ I didn’t think this blog would become popular, so it didn’t matter.
Gets me quite a few ‘adult’ searchers though. Some search around and find something they like… others move on quick.
As to my articles here. Don’t just rely on these (although I’m sure you do not). These are my ‘thoughts on making money on the internet’. The guys I link to can give you much more good advice than I ever can.
I just give my ‘take’ on it all
Lol! Thanks PB
Glad you liked the Authority Blogs link to the Piss Biscuit
RT,
Thanks for dropping by.
Absolutely agree that a higher PR can help in the SERPS.
It’s all a numbers game isn’t it?
If you have a higher PR than your competitor and are equal to them in most other things, then you will top him (or her) in the SERPS.
You have the authority.
But as I said, there are more ways to use authority than we sometimes think about.
This is practical discussion and good learning for me. So far I didn’t payed too much attention as my site is mainly accompanying real bricks-and-mortar business but it’s becoming real clicks-and-mortar also. Thanks for your reply. I am tuned to the same what you described. Advertising anywhere can have many different faces and it’s up to us how we apply the make up on own pages, and there is always testing and experimenting which makes the day jazzy.
Very true pizza oven - jazzy days work for me
Saw you over at PB’s blog getting some advice on optimizing your site. PB’s very helpful, he gives good advice on optimization, so I’m pleased you are working with him.
That’s a nice looking blog with a different niche, which is good.
I wish you success.
Oh, btw, someone has told akismet you are a spammer, so you turned up in my spam box. You need to contact them to let them know you are not, otherwise your comments will disappear altogether off of many blogs
Zania, I cannot say why my comments are marked as spam, I am not spaming, so i don’t understand. But you are second person who told me this. A while ago I think Yan did mention this to me before.
So, I just installed akismet plugin and will try to post my own comment. Then if it’s among spam i’ll mark it as no spam with the “de-spam” option and it’ll be sent to them. Hopefully akismet will clear it somehow.
How would you contact them about this? I searched their site but it’s not under Q and A
And thanks for letting me know about this!
Yeah, besides ego, the only thing PR is really good for is determining how much an ad is worth. At least this is MHO.
@pizza oven,
I hope that works.
If not, I would go to their contact page:
http://akismet.com/contact/
And submit a contact form
There’s no guarantee it will work mind, but I hope it helps!
@Blogging The Sports News (Nick),
Yep, some of those advertisers are still impressed by page rank.
But as RT said, it can help you in the SERPs,
and if you check out how Grizz used an authority blog… well, it shows PR can be made to have its uses..
Hmmm, Rado, till this very day, I still have to dig your comments from the Askimet folders eventhough you have been a regular commenter on my blog. I guess it has got to do with the keyword of your choice - pizza oven. Have you ever considered using another keyword and see whether it works?
I would have moderated and deleted your comment the very first time if not until I visited your site and verified your authenticity and we’ve been friends since.
The advise from Zania would be worth a consideration though I’m not too sure if they would actually response to your request.
Yan
Agree with Yan.
Some people seem to be akismeted permanently because someone thought fit to say they were spam (sometimes for their own reasons…). It’s not a perfect system by any means!
I do not mind people putting the keywords to their site or article as their comment name, but there are plenty who do.
Maybe you annoyed one of them?
Like Yan, I went and had a look at your site the first time you commented, just to see if it was okay. Bloggers with hundreds of comments do not have the time to do that and just treat keyworded names as spam.
Hope you can sort this out.
Hi, Zania:
I finally made it to your blog. Nice! I really digg the theme, and might just use it on my G34 Media. I have been looking for one for a few days now. I tried out like 6 themes yesterday on it, and none was good enough.
On the subject of Pagerank, it is hard to get past a certain level. Say a 3 or 4. Getting a 5 and 6 is really really hard. (IMHO)
I’ve been slapped around so many times, on many of my blogs, it is getting quite annoying. Having said that, i feel in the next update in October, i will prevail and jump to a 4 on G34 Media.
How?
1.) a series of backlink building campaigns
2.) strip away the homepage fat
3.) add loads more content
4.) link mostly to high pr and relevant blogs
5.) have someone check the back end of my blog
With all the above done, i should net a nice juicy PR 4 (or 5) in October. Then i will flip that baby. (just kidding)
P.S. Thanxs for the tip on the FeedWordpress plugin.
Missy.
Hi Missy,
good to see you here
Yes, the theme isn’t bad - could do with a tweak when I get around to it I guess, but I’m not a great theme tweaker!
Edit: Hey, no hanging about then. I’ve just seen G34 Media. It’s looking good! Maybe I prefer the red theme myself to this one now…. hmmm…
You have a nice blog there at Bloggers Search too
Yes, the more I read about PageRank, the more it seems you need that PR4 or preferably above to really use it (any way you can…) if you are going to get PR to work for you.
And when you have that PR5, you get link exchange offers coming at you from all sides (in my experience in my other areas of work…). So it does work if you use it in the right way (IMHO).
GR34 is looking good and I’ll wait to see if you decide to flip that site…

I will appreciate if you provide more details on this. Thanks.
You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with your blog.
I dont usually comment, but after reading through so much info I had to say thanks
Great and Brilliant article post, i was seeing for this information on google while i found your information, definitely i like your blog post !
There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in Features also.
